REGIONAL ECONOMIC BENEFITS

  • Generates employment for up to 12 employees.
  • Generates indirect jobs (12-14) for local trucking companies and generates business in surrounding areas.
  • Provides the local wallboard industry with a secure source of natural gypsum which is needed in home construction.

ENVIRONMENT

  • Best practices would be used to support strict compliance to all environmental regulations and requirements
  • Infrastructure designed to protect waterways
  • Weekly monitoring would be done to ensure compliance with Provincial regulations
  • An Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) will be submitted to the Provincial Government

Timing

  • Contingent on approval to move forward, construction would take approximately four months beginning in Fall 2023. The quarry life is an estimated ten years of production.

Mitigation Efforts

Dust

  • Dust-producing site activities would be limited to daytime during weekdays.
  • To limit the dust generated by trucks, the first 30 m of the site access road would be paved.
  • Dust suppressants (water sprays) would be used on site roads and crusher during dry periods.

RECLAMATION

(once the quarry is no longer in use)

  • Re-vegetating the site with species native to the area.
  • Promoting the site to return to a natural state once project is complete.

Noise

  • Blasting would be necessary about twice a month on average (excluding nights, weekends, and statutory holidays).
  • Notices would be published in advance of blasting to ensure residents are informed.

Traffic

  • During weekday operation, an increase to moderate levels of traffic would be added to the existing traffic on the preferred transportation route.(DTI approved trucking route below)

CONTRIBUTIONS TO THE COMMUNITY

As part of our commitment to improving the places where we live and work, we have made contributions to the local community. In the case of Upham, where a similar quarry is located, we have:

  • Contributed to the construction and maintenance of a new ball field which is available for use by the public.
  • Incorporated community engagement and feedback into site planning and operations through EIA process.
  • Contributed funds for a new roof on the community center.
  • Donated wallboard for renovations to the community center in the new year.
  • Supported various fund raising events for the Hammond River Angling Association (HRAA).
  • Contracted the HRAA for third party water quality monitoring.
